Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai Scotland
Kobudo Class Kongo-ryu
All through my martial arts training life I have practised kobudo but not formally, this opportunity came a couple of years ago when I joined the Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai with their background steeped in kobudo the perfect opportunity came along to formally set up a kobudo class within Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai Scotland branch of the Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai International.
After getting direction from Sense Sadaaki Sakagami Soke of the Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai and a great deal of help from Leo Mulveny head instructor of the Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai Republic of Ireland branch with Ayuma Oda from Californa helping a great deal in explaining and directing me through Kata also helping me was the talk group within the Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai International the Scottish Itosu-Kai Kongo-ryu kobudo class was set up in 2005.This style of Kobudo was set up by Ryusho Sakagami and passed on to his son Sadaaki Sakagami and through him to Itosu-kai members who wish to practice Kobudo.Ryusho Sakagami teacher was indeed the legendary Master Taira Shinken who also taught Sadaaki Sakagami
The main aims of the kobudo class was to make sure that proper care was taken to pass on correct knowledge & traditional weapons of Ryukyu Kobudo (Okinawan).
Using traditional farming and fishing implements the Okinawan people developed their tools into weapons that were very effective against the Samurai, this art of self defence became known as Kobudo or Kobbujutsu.
The traditional weapons taught within Itosu-Kai Scotland are Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Kama, Nunchaku and Tekko and all katas Kihon and kumite are traditional.
Kobudo training requires dedication in the pursuit of perfection and as such the student also requires dedication.
The grading syllabus within the Kobudo is in par with karate allowing progressive and increased learning at each stage building to black belt level.
Practicing Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai kobudo is an invitation to life time of training building spiritual and physical strength with the increased knowledge of the kobudo the art of Okinawan weaponry, the word kobudo means (the way of Ancient Warrior) we hope you enjoy this journey.
Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai is one of the foremost organizations in the study of kobudo Mabuni Sense Sadaaki Sakagami Soke and Tsumura Shihan all studied kobudo under Shinken Taira Sensei (1897 -1970) who had studied under Master Moden Yabuki the founder of Ryukyu (Kobujutsu Kenkyu-kai).
